A new student-created mural now adorns the lower level gallery of the Grohmann Museum at MSOE. SHARP Literacy partnered with MSOE, the Grohmann Museum, Design Fugitives and Forest Home Elementary School, to create the computer coded mural, “Connected by Code – Briana’s Dream.”    

The project was led by Meagan Van Ahn, SHARP Literacy’s arts and innovation specialist, which began in spring 2018 and included the participation of 50 fourth and fifth grade students from Forest Home Elementary School and five students from MSOE’s University Scholars Honors Program.  

Through SHARP Literacy’s coding program, the students created two murals that celebrate science and technology. The first mural was installed at Forest Home Elementary School last May. “Connected by Code – Briana’s Dream” tells the story of a fourth grade student and imagines her with a bright future in a science career. The 4 x 8 foot mural was created with the support of Design Fugitives, a high-tech architectural firm, who helped bring the artists’ and students’ vision to life. The project was funded, in part, by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund, the Wisconsin Arts Board and the National Endowment of the Arts.
