Kammein Mitchell
In September 2019, Kammein Mitchell (second from the right in the photo above) attended the Diercks Hall grand opening celebration and posed for a picture with Jensen Huang, founder of NVIDIA, and MSOE Regent and alumnus Dr. Dwight Diercks ’90, NVIDIA’s senior vice president and benefactor of Diercks Hall. After taking the photo, Mitchell never imagined he would accept an internship offer from NVIDIA a year later.
NVIDIA is a multinational technology company that designs graphics processing units (GPU) for the gaming and professional markets.
Mitchell, a junior software engineering student, will begin his front-end developer internship at NVIDIA in May 2021. As an intern, he will help build graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for GPU services for cloud computing in the fields of deep learning and AI.
“I’m excited to work for and contribute to a company of such high prestige in the technology industry,” said Mitchell. “Also, I get to experience California for three months so that’s a plus as well. I’ve never been there.”
The Charlotte, North Carolina native was originally drawn to MSOE because of its software engineering program.
“I chose to major in software engineering because I enjoy solving problems and creating useful inventions that can help mankind.”
Students in MSOE’s software engineering program gain knowledge and skill in all aspects of the software development life cycle, including requirements elicitation and analysis, software architecture, design, construction and verification. With the addition of Diercks Hall, students have new opportunities to gain hands-on learning experiences in the technologically advanced laboratories, preparing students like Mitchell for their jobs and internships.
Mitchell stays busy at MSOE as a member of National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and as a guard on the MSOE Men’s Basketball team. Mitchell enjoys being a part of a team of passionate players. “My favorite part about being on the MSOE basketball team is playing with a bunch of dedicated individuals—coaches included—that work hard and are selfless.”
With his degree in software engineering, Mitchell hopes to one day own his own business and find a way to help lower-income communities. When he’s not doing schoolwork, Mitchell enjoys watching movies, working out, and doing competitive activities such as basketball and escape rooms.
