Milwaukee School of Engineering will offer a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science beginning in Fall 2018, and students are invited to apply now. The addition of this degree further strengthens MSOE and the Midwest region as a national leader in artificial intelligence and computational science.  

“The computer science degree at MSOE will be focused on artificial intelligence, boldly placing us among the top CS degrees in the nation,” said Dr. John Walz, MSOE president. “Like all other MSOE programs, computer science students will be taught an industry-driven curriculum in an application-oriented environment, ensuring that they are prepared to hit the ground running upon graduation.”  

Some of the world’s largest companies and big cloud providers employ computer science professionals including Google, Amazon, Microsoft and NVIDIA, to name a few.  

“Artificial intelligence and deep learning have reached a golden age thanks to recent hardware and software advancements. The application of this in many industries is still untapped and in many cases, undiscovered,” said Dr. Derek Riley, program director of the new computer science degree. “Our students will apply computer science theory, machine learning algorithms, and software engineering practices to produce computing solutions for a wide variety of problems in many industries.”  

Students enrolled in all MSOE degree programs will be able to take computer science courses so they can understand the broad implications and applications of artificial intelligence in their respective fields.  

The program, which has been in development for months, comes on the heels of the announcement of the $34 million gift from Dr. Dwight ’90 and Dian Diercks to construct the Dwight and Dian Diercks Computational Science Hall in the center of the MSOE campus. Within Diercks Hall, students will work in state-of-the-art laboratories and have access to a GPU-accelerated supercomputer and other hardware from NVIDIA, the global leader in artificial intelligence, supercomputing and visual computing.  

MSOE’s B.S. in Computer Science was developed to meet or exceed requirements of the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC, a committee within ABET, http://www.abet.org) criteria. Formal program accreditation will begin once the first class of students graduates.
