A team of MSOE students took first place in the Central Northeast Region in the 2017 National Student Competition sponsored by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). As one of nine regional winners, MSOE will next compete at the national level during the Design-Build Conference and Expo in Philadelphia Nov. 9.

Congratulations to team members Deanna Engelmeyer, Max Morache, Hunter Ring, Trevor Symbal and Michelle VanBuskirk (team captain). They are all students in the Civil and Architectural Engineering and Construction Management Department. Dr. Jeong Woo, associate professor and construction management program director, is the team’s advisor.

DBIA is the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build. Each year, student teams from leading design, construction and engineering universities across the country entered the DBIA National Student Competition to demonstrate design-build best practices by proposing a delivery solution to design and construct a more than 14,000-square-foot student health center on a college campus.

DBIA’s 2017 National Design-Build Student Competition Regional winners represent teams from MSOE, University of Denver, Iowa State University, University of Arizona, University of Southern California, Roger Williams University, University of Florida, University of Oklahoma, and Washington State University

Regional juries, comprised of industry veteran professionals, selected the nine regional winners for the first phase of the competition based on their Request for Qualifications (RFQ) submissions, which advance them to the second phase of the competition. In the second phase, a Request for Proposals (RFP) will be released to each finalist team. From this pool of finalists, the top teams are invited to present their proposals before an expert panel during the annual Design-Build Conference and Expo. The final winners will be announced and presented awards at the conference.
