A team of architectural engineering and construction management majors is developing a plan to make the UMOS corporate headquarters in Milwaukee a “net zero energy” building. In addition, they’ll be setting up an information table at the UMOS job center to teach families ways to save money on their electric bills by switching out light bulbs and cutting down on energy usage. This work is the basis for their entry in the Green Energy Challenge, where 14 universities from throughout the U.S. are stepping up to make communities better.  

The students are members of MSOE’s National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) student chapter, and they are entering the Green Energy Challenge, hosted by NECA and ELECTRI International. Lemberg Electric is also partnering with the students to help bring their plan to fruition.  

MSOE’s team meets with the client while receiving information and feedback from local NECA contractors in order to compile an optimal design that fits the client’s needs. If the MSOE team’s proposal is chosen as one of the nation’s three finalists, they will travel to the national NECA convention to give an oral presentation on their project and compete for first place.
