General Information

Most of our first-year and second-year students live on campus. All unmarried first-year and second-year students under 21 live in one of our residence halls unless their primary residence is within 30 miles of campus.

  • Hermann Viets Tower (VT) accommodates up to 538 students (approximately 44 per floor).
  • Margaret Loock Residence Hall (MLH) accommodates up to 427 students (approximately 38 per floor).
  • Regents Residence Hall (RGN) accommodates up to 88 students (approximately 22 per floor).
  • Grohmann Tower (GT) accommodates up to 139 students on floors 4-7 (approximately 19 on floor 4 and 40 per floor on 5, 6, and 7).

The traditional and suit-style halls have single and double rooms on each floor. Single rooms are typically assigned to those that have specific needs. Grohmann Tower offers apartment-style housing. Floors 4-6 are reserved for first-year and second-year females, and floor 7 is reserved for the co-ed Nursing Living-Learning Community.

Hermann Viets Tower (VT)

1121 N. Milwaukee St.
Hermann Viets Tower opened in 2021 and is home to the Honors Program and Carter Academy living-learning communities. Viets Tower (formerly Roy W. Johnson Residence Hall) comprises 12 residential floors and a series of two-story collaboration hubs constructed in a southern-facing, glass-enclosed addition overlooking the Milwaukee skyline.

  • Each floor has a Resident Assistant who leads and plans activities, builds community on the floor, and supports a safe and welcoming living environment.
  • Each floor includes two community bathrooms and an accessible bathroom.
  • Modernized rooms and living spaces are designed to serve the diverse needs of all students.
  • The updated bedrooms include air conditioning units, and flexible furniture allows students to customize their living spaces.
  • New restrooms and a central study area round out each floor.

The living-learning communities and collaboration hubs encourage academic success and give students with similar academic, social, and personal interests the opportunity to live together, collaborate, and share experiences.

Margaret Loock Residence Hall (MLH)

324 E. Juneau Ave.
Constructed in 1967, MLH is named after the wife of a former president of Allen-Bradley Co. (now known as Rockwell Automation), Fred Loock, who was chairman of the MSOE Board of Regents. MLH is a co-ed hall that comprises 11 residential floors.

  • Each floor has a Resident Assistant who leads and plans activities, builds community on the floor, and supports a safe and welcoming living environment.
  • The residential floors are separated by gender and include two community bathrooms.

MLH features a TV lounge, a 12th-floor lounge, a laundry room, resident mailboxes, and the Resident Hall Association meeting room. The MSOE Central Housing Office is located on the ground floor of MLH.

Regents Residence Hall (RGN)

1121 N. Milwaukee St.
Regents Residence Hall was built in 1990 by Kahler Slater Architects as an addition to what was then RWJ (today's Viets Tower). Regents Hall comprises four floors of suite-style housing.

  • Regents Hall provides two Resident Assistants who lead and plan activities, build community on the floor, and support a safe and welcoming living environment.
  • Each suite has single and double rooms, a bathroom, and a common area for 3-5 residents.
  • Two floors are reserved for female students.
  • Two floors are dedicated to a gender-inclusive living community.

Regents Hall connects with Viets Tower and features a TV and vending machine lounge, laundry room, and study lounge. The Public Safety Department is located on the ground floor of Regents Hall.

Living-Learning Communities (LLC)

MSOE features three Living-Learning Communities (LLC) in the residence halls. LLCs allow students to extend their learning beyond the classroom and enable the university to continue fostering the growth of the MSOE Mindset. LLCs create comprehensive learning environments that heighten student engagement with faculty, peers, and their learning.

  • The Nursing Living-Learning Community is a two-year program for male and female first-year nursing students. The Nursing LLC launches in Fall 2023 and is housed in the Grohmann Tower. Join the Nursing Living-Learning Community!
  • The Carter Academy is one of a kind living-learning community for students to transition successfully into MSOE by gaining confidence in their academic and personal abilities, building a community of support, and gaining the resources for success. Ask your Admission Counselor if you are interested in the program. Eligible students will receive an invitation.
  • The MSOE Honors Program is a living-learning community designed to help you enhance your MSOE education with honors-level courses. In the Honors Program, you will explore innovative ideas, build relationships with classmates and key Milwaukee community members, and complete projects that pair engineering skills with a healthy dose of creativity. Ask your Admission Counselor if you are interested in the program. Eligible students will receive an invitation.

Interest Communities (IC)

Love robotics? What about outdoor adventures? Is music your thing? Are you a gamer?

Check out MSOE's Interest Communities (IC) in the residence halls. Incorporate your extra-curricular interests into your residential experience by living with like-minded students.

  • Health/Wellness/Fitness. This community is intended to engage residents interested in a Health, Wellness, and Fitness lifestyle, including interests in outdoor activities.
  • Gaming (MAGE/E-Sports). This community is intended to engage residents interested in board games, card games, Role-Playing Games (RPGs), computer/video games, and those who are into competitive video gaming. This floor connects students with MAGE, MSOE's sci-fi, gaming, and anime' club, and MSOE's E-Sports teams and coaches.
  • Music/Theater/Art. This community is intended for those residents who appreciate music, play an instrument, love to experience and create art, listen to music, and attend theater, ballet, concerts, or musical performances.
  • LGBTQIA+. This community is intended for those residents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, or who identify as allies.
  • Entrepreneurial/Business. This community is intended to engage residents that have an entrepreneurial mindset. This group will work with the CREATE Institute and the Rader School of Business Innovent Center to help develop students' MSOE mindset, ideas, innovations, and business ventures.
  • Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). This community is for female students majoring in engineering and technology who want to develop connections in the field. Similar interests help build friendships and networks beyond one's major. WISE members may be interested in the MSOE Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and MSOE Women in Technology.
  • International/Global. This community is intended to engage residents interested in exploring local to global communities and what they include. This features a focus on diversity and cultural experiences.

There are no requirements to live in an IC other than wanting to live with others who share your interests. ICs are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is open to all residents. About half of each group will be first-year students, while the rest will be returning students. Be sure to indicate which IC you're interested in on your Housing Application.
